Eulogy for Trees
Iowa was leveled by a derecho, and in an attempt to process the damage and document the beloved neighborhoods she grew up in, Bex Hurn grabbed her camera and set out to capture them before all the trees disappeared.
An unplanned narrative slowly unfolded in the creative process. It was obvious even in the first few photos how much humans need, use, interact and connect with trees. She found hammocks still attached, swings hanging, benches underneath fallen shade trees, while poems and paintings adorned dying trees. Further to that, it was made abundantly clear how animals interacted with the trees. Squirrels, cows, deers and rabbits all were present during the photo shoots, lingering near trees and downed homes, dealing with sudden and immense loss. What started out as way to comprehend and deal with grief, became a community project that tied individuals and neighborhoods together. It is the hope of the artist that these photos will serve as a remembrance to these decades old trees and the connection we have to them.
